Still 03:31
Took you at your word again Lies lingered on your breath As you did your best to talk me round Salvage what was left Told me how you’re different now About how you’d right your wrongs The red flags waved and passed me by Should’ve known it all along Still, you tempt me still Still, you tempt me still I try to let it go Keep my pride You catch me when I’m low I let you back inside Still, you tempt me still Still, you tempt me still
2.
Out Of Time 03:11
Head is spinning round I can barely see the ground The street’s a blur of flashing lights Passing cars and sirens, across the black and white The end is drawing near Our future’s clear We’re out of time Out of time What lies beyond the gates Will try our luck and test our faith But all the flights are full Final boarding call We’re out of time Out of time They’ll find us where we lay To watch the starships outrun the vapor trails We’re out of time Out of time Out of time
3.
One day we’ll leave and we’ll never come back Ditch the roads, cross the rivers and cover our tracks Find places on maps few have seen As far from the city anyone has been Take on despair whatever the cost Find a beautiful, beautiful place to get lost And if we take our time, reclaiming all we find You’ll see everything change To be exactly as you imagined it to Into the blue Far from the sins of mankind Beyond distractions, all we left behind Let the stars in the sky light the way Across landscapes the sun breaks The first light of day And if we take our time, reclaiming all we find You’ll see everything change To be exactly as you imagined it to Into the blue You’ll see everything change To be exactly as you imagined it to Into the blue
4.
Words of the saviour, painted and bright Call in a favour, slip away in the night All that you’ve given, a life can’t define Some remain hidden, revealed in good time They praise your name But words don’t mean that much They praise your name Banks of the river, water so calm Mourners in white wade in up to their arms As they reach for the heavens, gathered as one Sings hymns and lay flowers under the sun They praise your name But words don’t mean that much They praise your name
5.
Waves 04:19
All we didn’t say, the words we couldn’t keep When you went away I’d curse you in my sleep Still eats you up inside, it’s a war you’ll never win Nowhere left to hide, but struggle from within Big waves could drag me under Wash me out to sea Fill my lungs with water Deep enough to breathe Breathe Breathe I heard you call my name, drifting on the tide So we said goodbye again, catch you on the other side Still you’re running from the same old ghosts, faded by the sun Leave behind the ones you love the most, for safety on the run Big waves could drag me under Wash me out to sea Fill my lungs with water Deep enough to breathe Breathe Breathe
6.
Folk Song #2 02:48
When do the fables come to pass, And why do the good times never last? Catcher of falling knives beware, No I’m not drowning just coming up for air Expectations high Into something I Could never be Be Feels like my spirit’s drained away, Gathering losses every day Imagine fading that demand Letting it slip right through your hands Wasting the payments in advance Just hoping to get that second chance Expectations high Into something I Could never be Be Preview coming, what’s in store? For the many that have been before You’ll see Could never be
7.
Deep down in your chest Way down where the weariness rests It burrows inside To the spot where the pain still resides I’m wide awake With every ounce of strength that it takes just to be here When it feels like nobody’s coming to save you Cos it’s too late to call out the name that they gave you When the lights go down Reach out into space Lay back as the memory escapes You’ve nothing to say So float on drive the demons away The colder your heart Come on, come on and take me apart just to be sure When it feels like nobody’s coming to save you Cos it’s too late to call out the name that they gave you When it feels like nobody’s coming to save you Cos it’s too late to call out the name that they gave you When the lights go down
8.
Stones that skip across the water ripple on the bay Just as the tide that brought you here will carry you away Beneath the surface and the breaks Beyond the deep blue space Where the fearless disappear without a trace And the ghosts of those who passed Join the friends that didn’t last Reflected in the lines that cross your face If there’s no second time around Don’t let the currents drag you down Memories chased the shadows as they vanished with the dawn Storms that raged throughout the night until the rain was gone Beneath the surface and the breaks Beyond the deep blue space Where the fearless disappear without a trace And the ghosts of those who passed Join the friends that didn’t last Reflected in the lines that cross your face If there’s no second time around Don’t let the currents drag you down All the thoughts that kept you up at night are finally laid to rest Found a place to take you where the words just can’t express If there’s no second time around Don’t let the currents drag you down
9.
You always thought you were a cut above the rest Seeing out God’s plan Born into money you wore the privilege on your chest Hid the blood upon your hands Hid the blood upon your hands How do you sleep at night? Does the truth bother you? When it’s not enough for you to win, everybody else must lose To keep you satisfied Along the way you learned to lie and cheat and steal For someone like you it’s justified Obfuscate the details, the rest you can conceal And cover up with lies Cover up with lies How do you sleep at night? Does the truth bother you? When it’s not enough for you to win, everybody else must lose To keep you satisfied Keep you satisfied
10.
I’ll be there with you When the day is through We’ll dance among the stars so blue And I’ll watch over you I’ll hold your hand so tight Stay with you all night Until the morning light shines through I’ll watch over you When your eyes are tired I’ll sing a lullaby Under the light of a silver moon And I’ll watch over you I’ll watch over you

about

Daniel Trakell's 2nd album Into The Blue is out on November 24th 2023 through Dumont Dumont.

‘Into The Blue’ combines many musical genres from indie-folk to alt-country, the music and lyrics at different times evoking desert landscapes and the ocean. Drawing on inspiration from Elliott Smith, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Beck, Into The Blue (meaning to vanish without a trace) invites the listener to contemplate their own mortality on songs like Waves ("Big waves could drag me under, wash me out to sea, fill my lungs with water, deep enough to breathe), leaving everything behind on Into The Blue ("One day we'll leave and we'll never come back, ditch the roads cross the rivers and cover our tracks"), learning to trust your instincts on songs like Still ("The red flags waved and passed my by, should have known it all along") and being let down in the poignant Never Satisfied ("It's not enough for you to win, everybody else must lose to keep you satisfied")

The first half was recorded in an old church hall on the property of producer Josh Barber in the rural community of Mollongghip, 20 minutes from Daniel's hometown of Ballarat, before finishing up the second half with a live band at The Aviary studios in Abbotsford joined by Matt Dixon on pedal steel and Luke Richardson on double bass to record Still, Out of Time, Words of the Saviour, Waves and Never Satisfied.

Produced by longtime friend and collaborator Josh Barber (Gretta Ray, Queenie) who perfectly captures the mood and reflective quality of each song, weaving different layers of instrumentation where needed and stripping back to more sparse arrangements for the more emotional and poignant moments on the record.
